PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 1

When we start to graduate from our university, we enter a totally new phase in our lives. Not only we will have to adapt working full-time, we will also have to adapt to our new environments outside of work. Professional Practice 1 allows me to have extend knowledge about my future role as QS, both in consultant and contractor firm. The lecturer also encouraged us to be an ethical quantity surveyor, particularly in recommendation of tender award and financial transactions such as procurement, contractual arrangements, payments and valuations. These are areas which are susceptible to malpractice and corruption, particularly as the construction industry is characterised as being constructed on personal relationships.

Taylor's Graduate Capabilities

1) Citizenship and Global Perspectives

During lecture and tutorial classes, Mr Ramar, who is a very experienced QS, share a lot of practical real-life issues with us. There are always different informative learning lessons behind every experience story shared by him, which induces me to ruminate on how do I suppose to respond if I were in the situation. To be objective at all times. Give fair neutral advice, and never let my own dealings or interests cloud my judgement.

2) Lifelong Learning

I always look for ways to shape my skills, experience and the future of my career. Mr Ramar once told us that there are many things a QS graduate can do, we can be professional in certain area. Keep develop the area we are interested in and that can advance our careers within the workplace.

3) Thinking and Problem Solving Skills

For me, this skill is much needed for a QS. Through the lecture topics such as Procurement, Tendering method and Interim payment, we have learnt on how to provide advice to clients according to their requirements. Additionally, we also learn the basic knowledge on how to claim or review claim, incorporating various situations such as Extension of Time and etc, providing objective advice and implementing business solutions in specialist areas base on Form of Contract. (Using PAM Form 2006 in class.)
