MEASUREMENT 4
Before prepping for the internship, Measurement 4 equipped our knowledge in measuring external work. It includes the measurement of bored piles, renovation and demolition works and various elements of external works. Similar to previous measurement subject, we learnt specification writing according to SMM2. Additionally, this semester's measurement teaching focus on correct writing format of Bills of Quantities. What's more, through the ECA workshop which hold for a week, we manage to develop the ability to locate, extract and analyse data from multiple sources including drawn information. On the other hand, the measurement assignment allowed us to familarise with the nature of tendering process and contractual documentation, which I thought is indeed useful during my intern, especially when I was assigned to complete compilation of the tender document, it is certainly the most practical way for me to learn the tender document arrangement.

Taylor's Graduate Capabilities
1) Discipline Specific Knowledge
Upon completing the assignment, I am able to apply what I have learnt into practices. As what people said, experience makes learning faster. I can produce measurement for surface water drain in accordance to Standard Method of Measurement (SMM2), which makes me understand professional practice within construction industry.
2) Lifelong Learning
Other than that, the assignment also allows me to learn independently. I always keeping an open mind to learning and giving myself room for flexibility. In addition, I have learnt to locate, extract, synthesize and utilize information effectively from drawings and tender documents, which indirectly develop the next skill, thinking and probem solving skills.
3) Thinking and Problem Solving Skills
Through ECA workshop and assignement, I have trained to analyze problems encountered. Not all problems can have an ultimate way of solving it, but there's always alternative ways of reducing the undesirable impact. Also, I have also learnt that talking to others about problems can help us see things from a different point of view, opening up more potential solutions. By sharing it to others, we can as well improve the following skill, which is interpersonal skill.
4) Interpersonal Skill
Once, a lecturer told me, in construction industry, the most problem we deal with is not the technical problem, but the people we deal with every day. From the site workers, to our working team members, to the clients, we need to interact effectively to get along with others while getting the job done. This skill is the glue that holds the other three skills together. It includes effectively communicating, building rapport, and relating well to all people, from all backgrounds and communication styles. Some trivial arguements happened during ECA workshop and assignemnt, but from there, I learnt to be mindful of my team member's learning experience as well as to put myself into others' shoes. Eventually, as the elected team leader for ECA workshop, I realise the silver lining for all the hard work of guiding my team to reach its full potential resides in two things : create high performance team, having four or five people thinking about something is better and smarter than one person trying to figure everything out.
