This site visit is for the assignment of combination of 3 subjects, which are Measurement 1, Construction Technology and Building Materials. We are lucky enough to have the opportunity to have a site visit near the campus, even though we are told by contractor that we are not allowed to enter the building as we are not covered under their Contractor's All Risk Policy. This site visit is really a meaningful and pleasant one. It has brought together informal play and formal learning where we can actually incorporate theories and principles we have learned in class in a more hands-on way outside. The feeling of excitedness is shown on every single of us because it was the first time we had site visit.

Throughout the site visit, we learn to question the engineer( Mr Tang ), Sr Ang and two other lecturers( Miss Azrina and Miss Aishah ) and project supervisors there to clarify for understanding while simultaneously making ourselves understood. It had indirectly helping develop our communication and listening skills while interact with the site workers.

Most importantly, learning on site is fun! It is obvious that every single of us are at out happiest when we are learning out at site. For me who always thirst for adventure, I indeed enjoy myself during the visit as for me, it encourages an even greater passion for learning.

FINAL ASSIGNMENT

Our final assignment is to prepare a complete taking-off for the structural elements for the building for project at Taman Kerian Permai owned by Constant Skyline Sdn Bhd. The structural elements included :

  • Pad footings including excavations from reduce level.

  • Work below ground floor level including site clearance and excavation, ground floor slab etc.

  • Ground beams and apron slabs

  • Roof beams

  • Upper roof beams, columns and stiffeners.

Upon accomplishment of this assignment, we are able to explain and able to interpret clauses in the Standard Method of Measurement (SMM) and adopt a systematic approach to take-off quantities from drawing for the various trades in relation to sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works. Besides that, we can successfully identify and illustrate differences in writing-up descriptions in accordance to design changes for substructure and reinforced concrete frame works. It also allows me to evaluate the relationship between Specifications, Drawings and Bill of Quantities in Tender Documents for sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works as well as generating a conceptual understanding of and the ability to competently carry out the preparation of the Bills of Quantities for sub-structure and reinforced concrete frame works.

Doing this assignment was like doing revision for my final exam. The site visit and this final assignment has opened my eyes to the construction site work. It also enables me to have a better clarification of a Quantity Surveyor's job scope and allows me to gravitating towards future path. Undoubtedly, the time spent in every lecture hall was worth it, as I learnt so much from my lecturer in school. I was blessed to meet lecturer who goes the extra mile for us as students.
