BUILDING MATERIALS

The slides above are the building materials that another group mate, Yong Seen Yee, and I discovered from the view of bridge connecting Block D and Block E, Level 7, Taylor's University Lakeside Campus. We have made detailed observation of the surrounding materials, and the 5 predominant materials we have noticed are Plastic, Aluminium, Concrete, Steel and Glass. This assignment has exposed me to the respective characteristic of those building materials. After doing various research and readings, I am able to put the theories into consideration while creating analysis and reasons of the materials used for the particular part, such as corridors, roofs, windows and etc. On a side note, due to interest towards design, I have helped to design the boards for my group. This assignment has enabled me to apply ICT knowledge while designing the board.

FINAL ASSIGNMENT

This site visit is for the assignment of combination of 3 subjects, which are Measurement 1, Construction Technology and Building Materials. We are lucky enough to have the opportunity to have a site visit near the campus, even though we are told by contractor that we are not allowed to enter the building as we are not covered under their Contractor's All Risk Policy. This site visit is really a meaningful and pleasant one. It has brought together informal play and formal learning where we can actually incorporate theories and principles we have learned in class in a more hands-on way outside. The feeling of excitedness is shown on every single of us because it was the first time we had site visit.

Throughout the site visit, we learn to question the engineer( Mr Tang ), Sr Ang and two other lecturers( Miss Azrina and Miss Aishah ) and project supervisors there to clarify for understanding while simultaneously making ourselves understood. It had indirectly helping develop our communication and listening skills while interact with the site workers.

Most importantly, learning on site is fun! It is obvious that every single of us are at out happiest when we are learning out at site. For me who always thirst for adventure, I indeed enjoy myself during the visit as for me, it encourages an even greater passion for learning.

Overall, this module has introduced me to a variety of building materials practiced in construction nowadays. I get to know the use, physical and chemical properties of each type of building materials, to understand the effect of building materials on construction and structural qualities as well as

analysing problems associated with different materials used.
