ESTIMATING
Just before Estimating classes started, I have no idea what is the difference between Estimating and Measurement. I thought they were supposed to be the same. Then after explained by the lecturer in the first lecture, I have finally came to distinguish them.
Estimating is a process of calculating the approximate cost of a result which is usable even if input data may be incomplete or uncertain. Estimating uses the knowledge of building up rates, just like what we have learnt in our one-week long ECA workshop. Conversely, measurement is a process of quantifying items according to a rule or set of rules like SMM2.
In this subject, I have learnt to adopt a systematic approach to estimate the unit rates by considering and evaluating other factors influencing the cost of the construction components and elements. Through the assignment, we also learn to analyze the factors influencing the cost of the construction components, elements and project including pricing and preparation of tender on a measured work section of Bills of Quantities in a team or independently.
I have also gained hands-on experience on preparing tender submisson. We are required to Obtain the tender documents as per the tender invitation and obtain quotations for estimate by sending emails or calling the suppliers. Threafter, estimate the unit rates using the quotations received, compile and complete the tender document then prepare for submission. Our group has been shortlisted as the lowest price tenderer because we get good discounts for the materials from our suppliers.

Taylor's Graduate Capabilities
1) Discipline Specific Knowledge
Upon completing the ECA workshop, I am able utilize what I have learnt into preparing tender submission. And by having the skills of estimating, it also helps me in completing my Software Application assignment, whereby we were to preparing a set of bill of quantities by using Buildsoft. We need both the knowledge and the action. We need to learn and we need to do. And I have managed to combine knowledge born from study with sincere practice in different subjects.
2) Thinking and Problem Solving Skills
Through ECA workshop and assignement, I have trained to analyze problems encountered. Not all problems can have an ultimate way of solving it, but there's always alternative ways of reducing the undesirable impact. Also, I have also learnt that talking to others about problems can help us see things from a different point of view, opening up more potential solutions. By sharing it to others, we can as well improve the following skill, which is interpersonal skill.
